Missions at Faith

We have a long history of reaching out to our community and the world, caring for needs locally, nationally, and internationally.  Whether it's serving in local homeless shelters and food banks, financially supporting community organizations, repairing homes and building relationships around the country (and the world) through our youth mission trips, building relationships and repairing/building facilities with our partner missions around the world, Faith is committed to reaching out to our community and world, celebrating the healing love of Christ.

Feeding the Hungry and Homeless

Faith UMC provides meals to several homeless shelters and donates food to local food pantries.

Sign up to provide a shelter meal at Dorothy Day Place or Sophia House

Dorothy Day Place

Located at 251 N. Stone Street in Rockville, Dorothy Day Place is a transitional shelter for single adult women run by Catholic Charities.  Faith members prepare dinner for the women on the second Sunday of every month.

Sophia House

Located on Wilkins Avenue in Rockville, Sophia House is a short-term emergency shelter for women who struggle with issues related to mental illness, substance abuse, trauma, and long-term disabilities. It is run by Interfaith Works.  Faith members prepare and serve dinner on the second Saturday of every month.  We also provide breakfast for the next morning.

Community Based Shelter

Located on Wilkins Avenue in Rockville, Community Based Shelter is a transitional shelter for single adult women run by Interfaith Works.  Faith members prepare and serve dinner for one week a year.  We also provide breakfast and lunch for the week.

Table of Sharing

Food donations of non-perishable items can be placed on the small Table of Sharing in the Narthex.  Canned foods, boxed foods, and kids' snack foods (no glass items please) are welcome.  Food is distributed to Manna Food Center in Gaithersburg or to Rockville FISH/HELP (a local food pantry providing emergency assistance).

Local Organizations We Support

Faith UMC provides financial support through our congregational offerings and fundraisers to local, national, and international organizations.  We also encourage members to volunteer their time.  Here is a listing of some of the organizations we support in the local area.  Click on the links to learn more about the organizations and how you can get involved.

Interfaith Works

Interfaith Works (formerly known as Community Ministry of Montgomery County) is a non-profit coalition of more than 165 interfaith congregations of diverse faiths working together to meet the needs of the poor and homeless in Montgomery County.  Their programs house, feed, and clothe our neighbors as well as advocate on their behalf.  Faith UMC has been a member of Interfaith Works since its inception.

Community Ministries of Rockville

CMR is a non-profit organization that seeks to improve the quality of life for the most vulnerable in our community by providing basic services including housing, healthcare, homecare, education, and emergency assistance.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity in Montgomery County seeks to reduce substandard housing by providing a hand-up rather than a handout to help families realize the dream of homeownership.

Rebuilding Together

Rebuilding Together is a nonprofit working to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize communities.  They provide free rehabilitation and critical repairs to the homes of low-income families.

International Organizations We Support

Faith UMC provides financial support through our congregational offerings and fundraisers to local, national, and international organizations.

UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief)

UMCOR is the non-profit global humanitarian aid organization of The United Methodist Church.  UMCOR is working in more than 80 countries worldwide, including the United States.  Their mission, grounded in the teachings of Jesus, is to alleviate suffering.  They respond to natural or civil disasters that are interruptions of such magnitude that they overwhelm a community's ability to recover on its own.  UMCOR works with local partners and survivors to help them rebuild their livelihoods, health, and homes.  During acute crisis, they mobilize emergency aid and then stay as long as needed to implement long-term recovery.

Africa University

Located in Zimbabwe, Africa University was established as a private educational institution in 1972 by The United Methodist Church.  Africa University is a consequence of the growth of United Methodism in Africa.  This growth led African bishops to call on their church to invest in higher education.  Undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as short courses, are offered in areas such as agriculture, business and public administration, education, health sciences, humanities and social sciences, peace, leadership and governance, and theology.

Russia United Methodist Theological Seminary

In 1995 the United Methodist Church founded the Russia United Methodist Theological Seminary to meet the leadership needs of the growing church in post-Soviet Union Russia.  Faith UMC has had a 10-year+ history with Russia through mission trips to Vladimir, a relationship with our sister congregation in St. Petersburg, and now with the Russia UM Seminary.
